You go to open a quick text note, edit a configuration file, or follow a guide that says “open Notepad,” and it is not there. Searching the Start menu returns nothing. When Windows 10 Notepad missing happens dewaasia, a tool most people take for granted has vanished.
Starting with Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft turned Notepad, along with Paint and WordPad, into optional features. They are still installed by default, but they can now be removed, either deliberately or by a cleanup tool.
A failed update can also leave Notepad partly removed, so text files open in another program or not at all.
Reinstalling it takes a minute through Settings.
The problem often appears alongside missing Paint or WordPad, which is a strong hint that optional features were removed together.
Why This Happens
Notepad disappears for these reasons:
- It was removed from Optional features, sometimes by a “debloat” script.
- A feature update did not reinstall it correctly.
- The .txt file association now points to a missing program.
- Its Start menu shortcut was deleted, while the program still exists.
If typing notepad in the Run box opens it, only the shortcut was missing.
Start With These Basic Checks
Check whether it is really gone.
- Press Windows + R, type notepad, and press Enter.
- If it opens, right-click its taskbar icon and choose “Pin to taskbar.”
- If it does not open, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and select Optional features.
- Look for Notepad in the installed list.
- If it is missing, continue to the next section.
On older versions of Windows 10, Notepad is part of the system and cannot be removed this way, so a missing Notepad there points to damaged system files.
If Notepad is listed as installed but still will not open, select it, choose Uninstall, restart, and then add it again to get a fresh copy.
Going a Step Further
Reinstall Notepad.
- On the Optional features page, select “Add a feature.”
- Search for Notepad, tick it, and select Install.
- Restart the PC.
- Right-click a .txt file, choose Open with > Choose another app, select Notepad, and tick “Always use this app.”
- If Notepad still fails, run sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt.
The same Optional features page can reinstall Paint and WordPad if they are missing too.
A Word of Caution
Avoid downloading “Notepad.exe” from websites, which may be modified or unsafe. Review any cleanup or debloat script before running it, since many remove built-in tools.
Final Thoughts
Notepad is an optional feature in newer Windows 10 versions. Reinstall it from Optional features, restore the .txt association, and repair system files if needed.
Once Notepad is back, consider pinning it to the taskbar so it is always one click away for quick notes and editing text files.
